Dear Friends,
On May 16 2008, I announced my official candidacy for Senate District 3 seat in the Nevada State Legislature. I want to be your common sense voice in Carson City and I need your help.
My husband, Ted, and I have lived in Reno over 25 years and in Nevada over 50 years with our two children and ten grandchildren. I attended Washoe County schools and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno.
While serving on the Nye County School Board of Trustees from Tonopah and four terms in the Nevada State Assembly as your voice, I stood consistently for the principles of lower taxes, family values, and less government regulation. As your Senator, I will continue to stand for those same principles.
As Chairman of the Board of We the People Nevada, I joined Assemblyman Don Gustavson in filing the Nevada Property Tax Reform Initiative (Nevada’s Prop 13) to keep us from being “taxed out” of our homes. Most Nevadans support stable, predictable, and equitable property taxes for all property owners.
I have fought hard for fiscal responsibility in our state by consistently voting “no” on blatant and unnecessary tax and fee increases. I voted against the largest tax increase in the history of the state. The tax increase was unnecessary just as I predicted and generated an embarrassing surplus that was only partially refunded to the citizens of Nevada. Now the state reports a shortfall of almost exactly the amount of the 2003 tax increase. We must be ready for another “tax attack” in 2009.
When the Nevada Supreme Court nullified our Constitutional two-thirds requirement to pass tax and fee increases, Dr. John Eastman of the Claremont Institute and I fought that decision. I will continue to fight for the protection of our Constitution’s basic principles of representative democracy and separation of powers. I will stand firmly against activist judges that are usurping legislative powers.
In the 2003 session I introduced a bill to remove some of the taxes on gasoline. I am committed to energy measures that will attack the root problems of high gasoline prices affecting every citizen’s pocketbook and Nevada’s tourist economy.
The Immigration system is broken. We must follow the example set by other states to enforce the laws against illegal immigration.
I have made a difference in Nevada. Often the vote has been 62 to the lone Angle “no” vote against the herd mentality on poor policy and runaway government spending. I have a proven record of principled votes and accomplishments that meet real needs.
I need your vote on Aug. 12.
Warm regards,
Sharron
PS. I look forward to representing you again in the Nevada Legislature. I need your help for radio and television advertising, billboards and yard signs, and direct mail.
